Cyber Security Update Workshop

Course Description

This session is a general introduction to the computer security landscape for anyone who has access to the computers of an organisation. It highlights the many forms of attack and how they can be mitigated either through the use of hardware or software or through the vigilance of the users themselves. It will discuss the trade offs between security, cost and convenience and will give examples of security breaches that have made the news in recent times. It will conclude with examples of the potential costs associated with a security breach and a very clear message that everyone has a part to play in protecting an organisation from hackers.

Background

Cyber Security is an ever-present problem for computer users in general but businesses and those in the financial services industry in particular. There are many things that can be done to improve computer security but very often the weakest link in the chain are the knowledge and skills of the actual users themselves. All of the efforts of an IT department and the large amount of money spent on computer security hardware and software can be completely invalidated by a simple post-it with a password on it or a user who unknowingly turns off some security measure for their own convenience.
